New Brunswick Housing Authority
Hosts 5th Annual Big Chill Santa Toy Giveaway
(NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ) – The New Brunswick Housing Authority
(NBHA) held
its 5th Annual Big Chill Santa Toy Giveaway today, to begin
distributing more than 3,200 new toys to the children of the
New Brunswick Housing Authority and
other service partners. Toys will be distributed to NBHA families while additional
toys will be donated to other New Brunswick public housing sites, the Franklin
Township Housing Authority, the State of New Jersey’s Division of Youth & Family
Services (DYFS) and the Shelter for Battered Women and Children.
All toys were donated through the generosity of Rutgers University students,
faculty, and local residents who participated in Rutgers University’s 5th
Annual Big Chill 5K Run/Walk on December 8, 2007. The race drew at least 2,700
participants and over 3,200 toys.
John Clarke, NBHA Executive Director stated, “For the fifth year in a row,
the children of our City’s public housing developments will benefit from
the kindness of Rutgers University students, faculty and local residents. I am
truly grateful that the spirit of giving during this holiday season is alive
and well throughout the entire Rutgers community and within the City of New Brunswick.
On behalf of all the children that will be receiving these gifts, I would like
to thank everyone that participated in the Big Chill event for their effort and
generosity. ”
The Big Chill is a unique charitable event that was created by the Rutgers University
Recreational Services Department back in 2003. There is neither a registration
fee nor a requirement to raise funds. Instead participants are asked to bring
a new toy for a child between the ages of 4 and 14. In only its fifth year, the
Big Chill 5K Run/Walk had over 2,700 participants (1,800 more than its inaugural
year of 2003) who donated over 3,200 presents (2,200 more than the first year).
According to Rutgers University Associate Dean of Recreational Services Diane
Bonanno, “The hard work that my staff and all the volunteers achieved in
planning to create a successful event was well worth it on race day. The outpouring
of generosity by the event participants through all their donations was incredible.
I truly am proud to be a part of this charitable event.”
